The discovery of a golden orb on the ocean floor, initially sparking extraterrestrial speculation, has now been revealed as the organic remains of a rare deep-sea anemone, Relicanthus daphneae. This finding highlights the ongoing mysteries of deep-sea biodiversity and the challenges in classifying organisms that don't fit neatly into existing categories. The orb's smooth, organic surface and initial examination findings led researchers to rule out extraterrestrial origins and explore alternative explanations. Through DNA sequencing and a revisit to an earlier specimen, the team identified the orb as a detached cuticle from R. daphneae, an anemone that produces a multi-laminated, golden cuticle around its base as it moves along the ocean floor. This discovery not only sheds light on the biology of R. daphneae but also explains why no specimens retain the golden coating. The study emphasizes the vast unexplored areas of the ocean, with over 80% remaining unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored directly, underscoring the need for continued exploration and research to uncover the secrets of the deep sea.
